When considering the prospect of setting up our own business, our discussions led naturally towards the question 'What would we call ourselves?'.

We felt that our name should either describe what we do, reflect how we do it, or infer the benefits of using us. In the end we settled on Alt Tab, a name that we think encapsulates each of those conditions.

Often new media developers need to wear more than one hat, without the luxury of time for a costume change. There are occasions, for example, when one can be found in the middle of a creative brainstorm and need to switch swiftly to more pragmatic technical thoughts. This is where the ability to multitask is called into question and is the main inspiration behind the name Alt Tab - Microsoft Windows users may be familiar with the ability to switch from one open program to another by pressing the 'Tab' key while holding down the 'Alt' key. In one sense this could be regarded as multitasking and an important trait of a developer.

We also liked the potential for Alt to be representative of us as an 'alternative' product/supplier and for Tab to be the 'tablet' providing the remedy.
